ZYTEC Non-Contact Drive is Ex by Design
The ZYTEC Non-Contact Drive transmits torque and controls speed through a magnetic air gap, with no physical contact between the motor and the driven machine. In explosive atmospheres, this principle is more than an advantage. It is the foundation. Ignition sources are not controlled or contained. They are absent.

What Ex by design means
No source, no risk:
Ignition sources are eliminated at the design level, not managed, not enclosed.
Safe by physics:
Magnetic torque transmission through air has no arcs, no friction, predictable and controlled surface temperature.
Stays safe over time:
No electronic aging, no wear parts. Ex integrity does not degrade across a 30-year asset life.
Ex. Safe

Variable Speed - no electrical ignition risk
Speed control in the NCD is purely mechanical. The air gap between the Inductor Rotor and Magnet Rotor is adjusted by a standard Ex-certified actuator, identical in design to those used on throttle valves throughout the plant for decades.
No power electronics enter the hazardous zone. No high-frequency switching, no bus capacitors, no special motor cabling. The Ex zone sees a rotating mechanical assembly and a familiar actuator. Nothing more.
Torque without contact - misalignment becomes irrelevant
Because the two coupling halves never touch, there is no friction pathway in the drivetrain. Thermal growth, foundation movement, and pipe strain continuously shift shaft positions during operation. In the NCD, these shifts have no consequence, predictable and controlled surface temperature, no wear accumulates.
The coupling’s Ex integrity is independent of installation accuracy and operational alignment drift. Zone 1 compliance does not depend on how precisely the machine was aligned last year.
Consumable-free by design — no oil, no seals, no leakage risk
The NCD contains no oil, no process fluid, no sealed internal volume, no consumable parts. From cold start through full-load operation to overload and shutdown, the drive system introduces no liquid into the Ex zone and no risk of mist, vapour, or contaminated residue on surrounding surfaces.
There are no seals to inspect, no temperature plugs to monitor, no fluid-related maintenance procedures to manage under permit-to-work conditions.
